Withys, Barnhill Road, Ridge, Nr. Wareham

These three family houses, in the ‘Arts and Crafts’ style, are located at a level lower than the existing road, due to existing levels within the site falling away from the road. This reduces their visual impact from the street scene, and also provides a roof ridge and eaves level compatible with the adjacent existing houses.

A new site access has been created, giving oblique views of plots one and two and more distant views of plot three. The use of strong roof forms with varying eaves levels, exposed decorative chimney stacks and overlooking windows at both ground and first floor levels, ensure the importance of plots one and two to the street scene. The focal point of the vista through the site is provided by the strong hipped roof form to plot three, with additional interest created by the roof form to the detached garage adjacent.

External materials are very traditional, consisting of light coloured render or red stock face brick under a clay plain tile roof with ‘bonnet’ tiles for the hipped roofs. Windows are traditional timber with glazing bars and painted.

Trinity prides itself on not following a “one style fits all” design philosophy, as past projects will prove. This allows the flexibility when preparing solutions for ever increasingly difficult sites.
