What is Linear LED Lighting?

Linear LED lighting utilises LED (Light Emitting Diode) technology to create a new style of interior lighting. LEDs first came into public use in the 1960s, but at this point they were inefficient and could only produce single colours rather than white light, so tended to be used as indicators rather than for illumination. As LED technology has advanced over the years, it has now become the most efficient light source available, using up to 90% less energy that incandescent lighting, making them an extremely popular lighting solution in recent times.

What is Linear LED Lighting?

Linear LED lighting is enabled by packaging together LEDs in narrow housing. Its use in turn has completely revolutionised lighting design across a range of applications. Previously the lighting of longer spaces was a real challenge for the available technology. Incandescent bulbs weren’t suited to linear lighting applications, and fluorescent tubes lacked the ability to link luminaires together, causing dark spots between fixtures. LED luminaires started to be used as the preferred lighting option more frequently in the early 2000s and the technology is rapidly evolving, improving the aesthetics, performance, and range of options available to lighting designers all the time.

The following key benefits of LED Linear Lighting have led to this progression:

Appearance

Linear LED Light offers the versatility to create unique and stand-out designs. This can be delivered through the ability to have bespoke angles and custom RAL colour powder coating etc.

CCT Range

The use of LEDs means that you can have a wide selection of colour temperatures. Mood scenes can be created utilising warm or cool LEDs. Having these options makes it possible to design spaces with human well-being in mind to an extent that was impossible with fluorescent tubes.

Energy Efficiency

LEDs are incredibly efficient compared to other lighting technologies; they also offer vastly superior lifespans.

These significant benefits make LED linear lighting very popular for use in;

General Lighting – Powerful lighting that creates background illumination within a space.

Task Lighting – Light that is measured to emit the ideal lux levels for particular tasks to be completed.

Accent Lighting – Utilising of light to bring focal attention to a feature.

Mounting of Linear Lighting

Linear LED luminaires can be suspended, surface mounted or recessed. Pendant fixtures are often popular in spaces where there is a higher ceiling, taking advantage of that extra space to utilise indirect lighting distribution. Linear profiles that use indirect lighting make a space feel bright, open and airy, perfect for areas like receptions and atriums.

Surface mounted luminaires achieve a similar effect for spaces with lower ceilings. Recessed linear luminaires are great for creating clean lines of light.

Versatility of Linear Light

Linear LED profiles can be combined to create unique shapes to capture people’s attention. The ability to connect fixtures together as a single light means that all sorts of shapes can be built, these can be utilised to show off company culture or branding. Technological advancements also mean that linear profiles can now be curved, giving greater flexibility in design.

This all means that LED linear Lighting can be used seamlessly across a range of applications, its greatest strength is perhaps the ability to fit in seamlessly to range of designs for the likes of office, architectural and commercial spaces.
