The Role of Smart Home Design in Managing Overheating During Heatwaves

Until recently, the principal focus of thermal design in UK residential and commercial buildings was primarily the prevention of heat loss during the winter months, however, times and the climate are changing. 

There is growing evidence of an increase in overheating in UK buildings which do not house air-conditioning systems.  As the planet’s temperature continues to rise, heatwaves are becoming more common throughout the summer months and the knock on effects throughout the built environment are becoming evident. 

Smart home design can play a crucial role in preventing houses from overheating during heatwaves.  Below are a few strategies worth considering:

1.      Automated Climate Control:

Smart thermostats and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems can be programmed to adjust the temperature based on occupancy and outdoor conditions.  They can lower cooling during peak sunlight hours and activate fans or cross-ventilation systems to circulate cool air.

2.      Energy-Efficient Windows and Shades:

Utilising energy-efficient windows with low-E coatings and smart shading systems can significantly reduce heat gain. These technologies allow homeowners to automatically adjust the amount of sunlight entering the house, blocking excessive heat while maximising natural light.

3.      Smart Landscaping:

Strategically planting trees and plants around the house can provide shade and act as natural barriers against heat. Smart irrigation systems can ensure efficient watering, maintaining healthy vegetation without excessive water usage.

Proper insulation of walls, roofs, and floors helps in maintaining stable indoor temperatures. Smart insulation systems can adapt to weather conditions, enhancing thermal performance during heatwaves.

5.      Data-Driven Analytics:

Smart home systems can collect and analyse data on temperature, humidity, and energy usage. This information enables homeowners to make informed decisions about energy-saving strategies and optimise cooling solutions. 

6.      Natural Ventilation:

Incorporating design elements such as operable windows, skylights, and atriums promotes natural ventilation, allowing hot air to escape and cool breezes to circulate throughout the house.

By integrating these smart design features, homes can mitigate overheating risks during heatwaves, providing a comfortable and energy-efficient living environment.
