The Future of Air Source Heat Pumps
Posted by ISO Energy on 2nd November 2022 -
The UK Government is advocating for the increased use of Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) as an important way to phase out fossil fuel boilers due to the zero carbon-emitting technology and efficient heat energy production, having approximately three times more efficiency than other heating alternatives.
It is clear that ASHPs will become the dominant technology in the UK heat pump industry. It is estimated that the UK will need to have a least 600,000 heat pumps installed by 2028 to be on track to net zero-carbon targets. The launch of the Government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme in May this year may be the catalyst for mass uptake of heat pumps as domestic heating systems.
Unlike some countries in Central and Northern Europe, such as Switzerland and Sweden, which have well-established heat pumps for hot water and heating, the UK relies on gas boilers (around 85%), with only 2% of the heat system coming from renewables and less than 1% being air source heat pumps.
