Station Hill developer Lincoln MGT has announced Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM) as the main contractor for the phase two of the £750 million scheme.

It means SRM will deliver the most prominent phase of the regeneration project, which includes the 275,000 sq ft ONE Station Hill office building, a new public square and a link bridge designed to provide level access from the train station through to the town centre.

It is due for completion in early 2024 when the 600-home phase one in Friars Walk will also complete. Occupation of the first homes in that phase will begin in Q2, 2023.

Alex Aitchison, director of development at Lincoln Property Company UK, part of the joint venture with MGT Investment Management, said: “As we continue apace at Station Hill, already one of the largest-ever speculative projects in the history of the Thames Valley, today’s announcement ensures that Reading will soon have a new, world-class welcome befitting it’s status.

“Sir Robert McAlpine brings with it over 150 years of experience delivering iconic construction projects and we are delighted to partner with them to deliver this unique, cohesive vision for the people of Reading.”

Ian Cheung, managing director, southern, at Sir Robert McAlpine, said: “This is also a great opportunity for Sir Robert McAlpine to be working with the skilled workforce locally and creating social value for the community.”

Cllr Tony Page, deputy leader and lead councillor for strategic environment, planning and transport at Reading Borough Council, said: “The front door to Reading is through its world class train station and, when complete, this phase will deliver a world class gateway befitting of the town.

“As well as private and affordable homes and new retail space, high quality public realm in the form of a new public square and a link bridge direct from the station to the town centre is integral to the design, which I am sure will be welcomed by residents and businesses alike.”
