London Build is the leading and largest construction & build environment show for London. This year, the expo took place on the 27th and 28th of November and was a huge success.

WHAT DID WE GET UP TO?

Kelly Armour, Property Recruitment Consultant, visited the Women in Construction Networking event which took place on the 28th of November on the main stage with industry-leading names such as Ruby El-Kanzi – Senior Design Manager at Wates Construction, Kath Moore – MD of Women in Construction, Michelle Hands – Director of NJ Engineering and  Sharon Duffy – Head of Transport at Infrastructure Engineering Transport for London, and Michaela Wain – Director of We Connect Construction and Apprentice Finalist 2017, holding a panel discussion on opportunities for women working in construction, diversity and gender imbalance within the built environment.

Kelly says “It was good to see that the event had such a successful audience and to listen to inspiring advocates from the construction sector during the panel debate.” Michaela Wain expressed that equality in construction starts with the family influence and that daughters should be encouraged to consider the construction industry as much as sons. Other panellists discussed how there was a distinct lack of female applicants when advertising for construction roles and that one way to encourage this is to express that the role is also open to women.

Kelly also enjoyed a day full of networking and catching up with her London based clients.

Scott Dunn, Senior Property Recruitment Consultant, focussed on the networking with Survey companies which he enjoyed introducing himself to.

Scott says “I found the exhibitors with high tech products were really interesting, enabling me to understand the technology in buildings moving forward.

One discussion that really took my interest was ‘The Housing Crisis, what is being done?’. This was really interesting hearing the challenges in London and how they are thinking of new ways to create living spaces for people in the future.”

Tom Bowman, Property Recruitment Consultant, attended the event on the 27th of November and says “The biggest highlight for me was talking to Jonathan Lel from Coral Reef Properties, who has just secured his first parcel of land to build a number of eco-friendly, zero emission homes from hemp (hemp-crete).

I also thoroughly enjoyed the talk from Fergus Harradence – ‘Let’s Talk Brexit and Infrastructure’ discussing how the current construction workforce is made up of roughly 13%-14% foreign nationals.

A non-construction highlight for me was of course playing darts with Bobby George, a very unexpected experience with a darts champion”.

Managing Director Joe Synes attended both event days and says “It was our first visit to the Property Expo and a really valuable two days spent meeting and speaking with a number of industry professionals, while also attending a number of really insightful talks and discussions.”

It’s fair to say the team had a great couple of days and learnt a lot from some renowned industry professionals.
