LocatED Seeks Sites Nationally for New Schools
Posted by LocatED on 25th April 2019 -
LocatED, the government-owned property company responsible for buying and developing sites for new schools, has released its April 2019 site requirements to the market.
Priority sites are needed for new schools in; Redbridge (23,000 and 89,000 sq. ft. GIFA), Greenwich, Southwark, Newham, Lewisham (34,000 and 100,000 sq. ft. GIFA) and Thurrock (25,000 sq. ft. GIFA). The published list includes full details and requirements across more regions of the country, it can be viewed here.
For LocatED, there is no such thing as a ‘typical’ school site; it does not work to a set group of qualities. Instead, it takes a creative approach to commercial opportunities and finding the perfect site so that it can be flexible and achieve the best result for the school and children who will attend.
Potential sites can therefore include; brownfield; greenfield; mixed-use sites; and existing buildings, that can satisfy the building size requirements. These can be whole or part buildings with development or extension capability, land and development sites on or off market, derelict and heritage buildings, sites of all planning designations and space as part of wider developments.
LocatED can take forward often constrained sites in dense urban areas to deliver mixed-use schemes with development partners, to provide quality new schools at the heart of communities. Capital generated from the sale of residential dwellings in schemes can subsidise the cost to government of delivering the new school, whilst offering a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with partners on strategic place making.
