Is Your Lift Ready for Digital?

It is safe to say that when the first commercial telegraph line was installed in London in 1837, its installers were not thinking about lift communication systems. At that point Morse Code was still the order of the day and telephones had yet to be invented. It wasn’t until the 1870s that voice communication became possible with the introduction of the first telephones into the UK and the development of telephone networks around the country. Today, over 150 years later, parts of that original telephone network infrastructure are still being used for everyday phone calls.
We have come a long way since those early days of telephone communication, and it is no surprise therefore to learn that such an ageing system is now beginning to struggle to cope with the sheer volume and range of use on the current network. It is for this reason that BT has taken the decision to undertake a complete replacement of the existing network by 2025, retiring the current analogue Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) and Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) systems and replacing them with a new fibre optic IP technology.
