How Sustainable are our Modular Homes?
Posted by Ideal Modular Homes on 22nd January 2021 -
As part of Big Energy Saving Week, we’re looking at some of the big industry news around sustainability, and sharing our thoughts, as well as highlighting some of the features in our sustainable modular homes. Today we’ll be discussing how we build sustainably, how we can save both money and energy for those living in our homes and why it’s important.
Created in collaboration with shedkm, OURhome - our affordable housing solution, has the ability to operate at net zero carbon. With air source heat pumps and solar PV, the operational energy of these modular homes will be not only better for the environment but also more affordable for the residents, helping to address the fuel poverty gap by reducing annual energy bills.
Energy-efficient heating systems significantly reduce energy consumption resulting in lower fuel bills by up to 50% for residents. Our modular homes also provide exceptional U-values, unbeatable air permeability and the use of triple-glazed windows and doors improves acoustics and thermal comfort. This, combined with solar PV and Air Source Heat Pumps, means that they have the capacity to operate at net-zero carbon.
To offset carbon emissions in construction, we use responsibly sourced timber, or cross laminated timber (CLT), for all of our modular homes. Responsibly sourced timber not only helps build truly sustainable communities and homes, but means that more trees are planted than harvested.
Utilising modern methods of construction, we’re able to quickly deliver the high quality and sustainable homes that are much needed. As mentioned in previous blogs, the housing industry alone leaves a large carbon footprint, and the built environment as a whole contributes to around 40% of the total carbon emissions in the UK. We’re able to help dramatically reduce this and provide a solution for both the housing and the climate crisis with beautiful, high quality and sustainable homes for all that ultimately help residents save money and energy.
