Communities in seven areas across England look to benefit from an investment of almost £180 million in new Town Deals funding to boost regeneration and help local economies outside of big cities. The funding is also set to sustain jobs, improve connectivity and boost economic growth at a crucial time, especially for local areas.
Announced by Communities Secretary, Rt Hon Robert Jenrick and designed to drive growth across the country, Barrow-in-Furness, Blackpool, Darlington, Peterborough, Norwich, Torquay and Warrington are the first to get the funding and work has started to confirm final funding.
Local areas have been forgotten in the past with a lot of funding hitting big city areas and with the pandemic crippling the economy, this will be a welcome plan. These areas now have the opportunity to invest in their local economies at such a crucial time and be a part of the government’s levelling up agenda, which looks to reshape our towns and cities. Helping businesses and communities to thrive, these landmark deals will see millions invested in projects across the country.
A further 101 towns will be selected to receive funding and further Town Deals are set to be announced this month. This builds directly on the government’s commitment to decentralise funding and decisions away from the Central government. It also builds on the wider government commitment to ensure nobody is left behind following the fallout from the pandemic.
Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick said, “This government is levelling up opportunities all across the country. We’re unlocking the full potential of towns and communities, giving them the support that they need to thrive, and the Seven Towns Fund Deals that I’m announcing marks the start of locally designed regeneration projects across the country. Backed by £180 million, we are boosting skills, job creation and connectivity in these seven towns – providing investment and confidence at a crucial time for these communities.”
