Celebrating Women in Construction Week 2023

This year's Women in Construction theme, 'Many Paths, One Mission', celebrates the different journeys women have taken toward the same goal: strengthening and supporting the success of women in the construction industry.
As we move further into the 21st century, the construction industry still lags behind other sectors in driving gender diversity. According to the latest data from the UK government's Office for National Statistics (ONS), as of October-December 2021, there were approximately 302,000 women employed in the construction industry in the UK. This represents only 13% of the total workforce in the industry. It's worth noting that this figure includes both on-site and off-site workers, and that the proportion of women working on-site is considerably lower, at around 1%. Such low figures highlights the fact that the construction industry continues to be a male dominated industry.
To encourage more women to join the industry, construction companies need to offer flexible work arrangements for working mothers. By offering women mentorship programmes and training opportunities this will further encourage more females into this industry and create a culture of inclusivity and diversity.
By taking these steps, construction companies can attract and retain more female talent and promote a more gender-balanced workforce. The greater the number of women taking up employment in the construction industry will no doubt inspire young girls to consider careers in STEM fields and further break down gender stereotypes in the future.
