Asbestos Surveys; A Cautionary tale!
Posted by Survey Hub Ltd on 29th May 2019 -
We recently read an article on the HSE’s website which highlighted the financial implications of not having a suitable asbestos survey in place before commencing demolition works. The private landlord and his builder, found themselves foul of breaching the law around asbestos control and both received heavy fines, as well as being ordered to carry out unpaid community work.
They didn’t carry out an asbestos survey before they pulled down an old conservatory and it was later found to contain asbestos panels which were damaged during the demolition works. This lead to asbestos contamination to be spread throughout the home and even into the adjoining properties. And of course, the site workers had also been exposed to the uncontrolled release of fibres.
Between them the landlord and builder had breached not only The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 but also The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015. If they had used a specialist asbestos surveyor prior to these works, they would have saved a lot of money and wouldn’t have needlessly exposed anyone to the harmful asbestos fibres.
